Sheep in a Jeep

by Nancy Shaw. Illus. by Margot Apple. 1986. 32pp.

About the Book

“Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep on a hill that’s steep,” opens this short romp about five silly sheep piled in a red jeep. Their joyride is met with setbacks when the jeep won’t start and then gets stuck in the mud. Sprightly colored-pencil illustrations give the sheep personalities and introduce animals not mentioned in the text such as hefty pigs complete with tattoos, who save the yelping sheep. But a worse mishap follows. No matter–after some tears, the sheep bounce back again. Nothing can discourage them for long.

Why this Book?

It’s so much fun. Of course, the premise of sheep driving a jeep is innately funny. Lots of children also enjoy seeing characters who are foolish like the sheep, which allows readers to feel a bit superior. After listening several times to the well-crafted text filled with words that rhyme with “sheep,” children and adults will know the book by heart. The repeated sounds make this accessible to beginning readers, a nice plus. I prefer this in the original sized hardcover or paperback rather than the board book, which is smaller. Seven sequels follow. Sheep in a Jeep has been highly popular for more than 35 years, for very good reason. Beep! Beep!
