Books for Birth through Age 8

Recommended by Kathleen Odean

All Fall Down

by Helen Oxenbury. 1987. 10pp.

About the Book

Lovable babies, who have different colored skin and hair, play together on each of the eight pages. The round-faced babies sing, run around, bounce on the bed, and gently fall down. The board book is unusually large, 8″x8″, which works well with Oxenbury’s irresistible pictures that fill the pages with happy babies. This is one in a quartet, all wonderful: Say Goodnight, Clap Hands, and Tickle, Tickle.

Why this Book?

Or more accurately, why this quartet of books? The fact is that very few board books these days were actually created as board books. Most were first published in a larger size with the kind of detailed pictures that don’t scale down well. Presumably publishers can’t resist the financial rewards. So books by the incomparable British illustrator, Helen Oxenbury, that she created for this format are a treat. I usually send at least 2 of these as baby gifts.
